Postdoctoral Salary and FLSA update (December 23, 2016)

There was an update today (12/23/2016) by BWH Office of Research Careers that provides information on postdoctoral fellows salary and FLSA update.

It is an important update and all postdoctoral fellows are encouraged to read it carefully.

In short summary (quoted from the update): “BWH requires departments to adjust all current fellows’ salaries to the new levels as soon as possible and NO LATER THAN September 30, 2017″

Here is the full update from Allison Moriarty, BWH Vice President of Research Administration and Compliance:

Over the last several months Research Administration and HR have worked with departments to increase the Postdoc fellow salaries to meet the anticipated FLSA rule change to be exempt and the proposed NIH/NRSA FY 17 scale, which was to go into effect December 1, 2016.  Although the FLSA rule change has been “paused”, the NIH has maintained the new FY 17 scale, and we would like you to consider the following and share within your departments/divisions:

  • BWH strongly encourages departments who have already increased the salaries of their postdocs to meet the FY 17 scale to maintain this level of support.
  • BWH requires departments to adjust all current fellows’ salaries to the new levels as soon as possible and NO LATER THAN September 30, 2017.
  • BWH requires adherence to the NIH FY 17 scale for postdocs hired after December 1, 2016.  All new hires on or after December 1, 2016 must receive an annual salary of no less than the current NRSA scale (link and FY17 scale below) at the time of appointment for years 0, 1, 2.
